Siddhartha, however, feels that everyone must find his own way to salvation and, hence, does not remain. Govinda cannot recognize Siddhartha when he encounters Siddhartha by the river, nor can Govinda recognize the truth about his own search for enlightenment.
Govinda stays true to the Buddhist path even though he has not achieved the wisdom he seeks, and he cannot see that the path has failed him. Knowledge can be conveyed, but not wisdom. He wakes Siddhartha up, and the two men go back to the river. This lesson teaches it is impossible for one to impose his or her knowledge of the timeless on one who remains subject to the limits of time.
Why was Siddhartha unhappy? Siddhartha was unhappy because he had begun to feel that the love of his father, mother, and friend were not enough. His father and teachers had already taught him most of what they knew, but he still wanted to learn a lot more. Siddhartha suddenly feels awakened. He is filled with purpose. He declares that he will no longer submit to teachings, but he will learn from himself and be his own pupil.
In this revelation, the world appears new to Siddhartha. What does Siddhartha do with the oldest Samana? Govinda feels great love toward Siddhartha and recognizes that Siddhartha has attained enlightenment. Govinda kisses Siddhartha on the forehead and then sees an eternally stretching, timeless continuum of faces and scenes and all of humanity. He reaches enlightenment. Logging out….
